Mental shortcuts for quick tipping
- 10% — move the decimal one place left. $64 → $6.40.
- 15% — find 10%, then add half of that. $64 → $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
- 20% — double the 10% value. $64 → $6.40 × 2 = $12.80.
- 25% — divide the bill by 4. $64 → $16.00.
Splitting the tip between people
Calculate the total tip first, then divide by the number of people at the table. For a $80 bill with a 20% tip split between 4 people: tip = $16, each person pays $16 ÷ 4 = $4 tip each, plus their share of the bill.
Tipping by service type

| Bartender | $1–$2 per drink or 15–20% | On a running tab, tip at the end |
| Food delivery | 10–15% (min $3–$5) | Tip before or after delivery; in-app is fine |
| Taxi / rideshare | 10–15% | In-app tip is now standard |
| Hotel porter / bellhop | $2–$3 per bag | Hand directly to the porter |
| Hotel housekeeping | $3–$5 per night | Leave daily — staff may change each day |

International tipping customs
| Country | Restaurants | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 18–22% | Expected; servers’ base wage is often below minimum wage |
| Canada | 15–20% | Similar to US; 13% HST on the bill can serve as a rough guide |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5% | Check the bill — a service charge is often already included |
| France | 5–10% optional | “Service compris” means service is included in the price by law |
| Germany | Round up or 5–10% | Tell the server the total including tip when paying cash |
| Netherlands | 5–10% optional | Rounding up is common; card tipping is widely accepted |
| Spain | 5–10% optional | Leave coins; a euro or two per person is typical |
| Italy | Rounding up | “Coperto” (cover charge) is already on the bill in many places |
| Japan | 0% | Tipping is considered rude; excellent service is simply standard |
| Australia | 0–10% optional | Minimum wage is high; tipping is common in upscale restaurants only |
Cash vs card tipping
In the US, tips left on a card go through payroll and may be pooled between staff. A cash tip goes directly to your server the same day. For hotel housekeeping, valets, and porters, cash is always best — they cannot receive card tips.
In most European countries, card tipping is now widely accepted. Ask the server before the card machine arrives whether you can add a tip — not all machines prompt for one automatically.

FAQ
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% is considered a minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 20–25% is appropriate for excellent service. In many European countries tipping is less expected — rounding up or leaving 5–10% is typical.
Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention varies. In the US, most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the full bill (including tax) is also common. Either approach is acceptable.
What is the tip on a $50 bill at 20%?
20% of $50 = $10. Enter 20 and 50 in the calculator above to confirm. The total amount to pay is $50 + $10 = $60.
How do I split a bill evenly including the tip?
Add the tip to the bill total first, then divide by the number of people. For a $90 bill with 20% tip: $90 + $18 = $108 ÷ 4 people = $27 each.
How do I calculate a tip without a calculator?
Use the 10% shortcut: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then scale up. For 15%, add half of the 10% value. For 20%, double the 10% value.
