Grade Calculator
Enter your grades so far and your target. Find out what you need on your remaining tests.
Grades so far
Enter each grade on its own line. Add your target average and how many tests are left.
How it works
The formula is straightforward: to find the grade you need, work out the total points required and subtract what you have already.
Worked example
You have three grades: 6, 7, and 5. You need a final average of 6. You have one test left.
- Total tests = 3 existing + 1 remaining = 4
- Points needed in total = 6 × 4 = 24
- Points earned so far = 6 + 7 + 5 = 18
- Points needed on last test = 24 − 18 = 6
You need a 6 on your last test to achieve a 6 average.
What if the required grade is impossible?
If the calculator shows a number above the maximum grade (e.g. above 10 on a 10-point scale, or above 100%), then the target is out of reach with the remaining tests. Your options are:
- Lower the target average.
- Ask whether extra credit or re-sits are available.
- Focus on minimising the shortfall to the best possible final average.
Tips for students
- Weighed grades — if each test counts for a different percentage of your final mark, this simple average calculator may not apply. Check your course handbook for weighting.
- Round up, not down — when the required grade contains decimals, aim for the next whole number to be safe.
- Check pass thresholds — some courses require a minimum score on the final exam regardless of your coursework average.

FAQ
What grade do I need if I have a 6 and 7 and want a 6.5 average?
Current sum = 13. Target for 3 tests = 6.5 × 3 = 19.5. Needed on last test = 19.5 − 13 = 6.5. Enter these grades above to confirm.
Does this work for percentage-based grading?
Yes. Enter your grades as percentages (e.g. 72, 85, 61) and your target as a percentage (e.g. 70). The calculator works for any numerical scale.
What if my grades are weighted?
Weighed grades require a different calculation. Multiply each grade by its weight, sum the results, and divide by the total weight. Contact your teacher or check your course guide for weighting details.
